So it seems that Matt Dinniman can only really write one story. “What if there were a bunch of powerful rich elites who were sadistic enough to make us play video games but real, and dumb enough to give the Real People the tools to destroy them with?” The plot goes out of its way to give the good guys all sorts of advantages and of course the elites are not smart enough to outwit a couple farmers with a robot. Enjoyable but I have to stop thinking about how little sense it makes that they even have a chance given the established stakes, or else the plot falls apart. And then, the characters all narrate their emotions like they just got back from a therapist and can’t wait to tell everybody. What ever happened to subtlety? If you’ve read Dungeon Crawler Carl you’ve read a better version of this story. This was okay but not good enough that I want to listen to it again at some point. Narration was great, I’d trust Travis Baldree to narrate my internal monologue. Never been disappointed with Travis.
