The Shapeshifter’s Secretary is a step forward for the series, finding a more consistent balance between its comedic instincts and the emotional throughline that the first two books couldn’t quite hold. The central pairing generates more genuine warmth here, and the workplace dynamic, always the series’ strongest element, is more purposefully integrated with the romantic arc rather than running parallel to it. Some tonal unevenness remains, and the resolution arrives a bit too earlier than the relationship seems to require, but the improvement in character coherence is real. It’s not a breakout installment, but it suggests Padilla is developing a clearer sense of what the series does well.
