Shattered Skies is a strong start to a post-apocalyptic survival series. The story follows several people dealing with a world-changing disaster, including Nick trying to get back home, Chris holding things together on a horse ranch, and Gabby being thrown into a situation that forces her to grow up fast. There are a lot of moving pieces, but the story does a good job giving each group enough time so it does not feel too scattered.
The beginning takes a little time to set everything up, but once the impacts happen and the survival side kicks in, the story gets much easier to stay hooked on. I liked that the characters felt like regular people trying to make hard choices, not action heroes who magically know how to survive everything. The disaster side also felt believable enough to make you think about what people would actually do when panic takes over.
Andrew Tell’s narration was clear, professional, and easy to listen to. He kept the story moving and helped bring the different characters to life without making it feel overdone. There were a few slower spots, but overall the audiobook held my attention well.
This is a good pick for listeners who enjoy disaster fiction, post-apocalyptic survival, multiple storylines, and characters you can actually care about. I’m interested to see where the series goes next, because Book 1 leaves plenty of room for bigger problems, worse people, and probably a whole lot more bad decisions from humanity.
