Donut is of course cranked up a notch of annoying, thus so is carls plot armor, causing most of his headaches. Carl is back to overthinking and panicking during every decision only to have none of his plans work and yet everything works out fine because of an in the moment choice. This addition to the series feels forced. The biggest problem is probably the lack of continuity with the card game, seemingly changing the rules or cards abilities on the fly to drive the narrative more so than the crazy AI was already doing. I’ll finish the series cause it started off strong, however, I doubt I’ll recommend it to anyone after this book. Side note, the voice acting was excellent as it has been for the whole series.
