I listened to the Audible version of The Correspondent, and for the first half of the book, I was hovering around 3 stars.
The story is told entirely through letters and emails, which was a little frustrating in audio. Constantly hearing the addresses, dates, and letter headings was bugging me. This is one of those books where I wish I had bought the physical copy instead. Take note. 📝
Once I adjusted to the format (and sped up the audio a bit), I became fully immersed in the story. The author’s skill in developing characters and relationships solely through letters and emails is impressive. I was particularly touched by Sybil coming to terms with her vision loss and the regrets that influenced her life.
By the end, I had gone from 3 stars to 5 stars. I genuinely enjoyed getting to know Sybil, and her story is one that will stay with me for a long time.
Side note: I loved all the bookish references sprinkled throughout the story. It felt especially fitting because I had just finished Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier that same week, and it was fun to see it mentioned more than once. Several books mentioned have already made their way onto my TBR list!
