I went into Dungeon Crawler Carl not knowing what to expect, and I emerged a total devotee. The premise is wild, the world ends, and the survivors are forced into a televised galactic dungeon crawl, but the execution is brilliant. It’s a sharp, hilarious, and often dark critique of power and the bureaucratic cruelty of the ‘intergalactic government’ that treats human lives like disposable entertainment. Being a gamer, I was immediately hooked by the mechanics. The way the AI handles loot, leveling, and environmental physics feels like a love letter to classic RPGs and survival games. It captures that high-stakes tension perfectly.
However, the real star here is the audiobook. Jeff Hays’ performance was what instantly catapulted this into a 5-star category for me. His range is unbelievable, from Carl’s gritty determination to Princess Donut’s high-society attitude; he brings a level of immersion I’ve rarely found in other series. If you’re looking for a powerful, unpredictable, and laugh-out-loud adventure, start here. You won’t regret it!
