Dr. Esolen is a gifted translator, who has a keen ear for rhythm and harmony, but not a literal translator, not here, and not in his Dante. His footnotes are excellent, both here and in his Dante.
The reader does a spectacular job, with just enough interpretation, and never interfering with the meaning.
