I DNFed this book at about 15% of the way in. Why? This was a free audiobook for me and one of the first reasons: The narrator. He was absolutely trash. He kept attempting a brogue accent, but it would slip and go away all together, only to come back hard the moment her realized..
Much of this book reads as if it’s an attempt to shock the reader. But anyone who has read Edmund White knows his background, knows the context he came of age in, and knows that people have sex. Some of us (like White, apparently) quite a bit of it. I don’t really think my life..

Story Dragged on for so long and also didn’t enjoy the narration. As someone who gets distracted easily, it requires concentration to follow.
Magic, mystery, fox + overpowered MC → are the only things that carried the story.ML’s attraction → If the ML comes from a very different time period, instant attraction without cultural or personal context feels lazy. Not only was this book comforting, it was eye-opening. The more we separate ourselves from the natural world & try to impose some level of higher power, the further away we get from realizing we are all connected & can learn from each other. Thank you for this wonderful book❤️
