R.E. McDermott creates post apocalyptic stories that are realistic and believable. And Kevin Pierce is my fave narrator of this type story.

There is a lot of jumping around and introducing of character’s, so at times I wasn’t sure I was going to get through. I assume this was all done to prepare for the ending and future books.
This is an interesting novella that accompanies the Black Autumn story line. Although followers of the Black Autumn universe will see this as fulfilling, I found it only interesting and not really a crucial part of the overall story – unless there is some over-arching mashup the authors are developing in the future. There are some nice plot twists in the story, though some of the narrow escapes seem a little convenient. This has a good commentary on power, hierarchy. I enjoyed the story-line and writing style, especially that it isn’t graphically violent. However, it feels fringe in its’ assumptions and beliefs as if author is trying to convince me of a world-view using the story and characters to do that. I am really looking forward to the next one! I wasn’t sure I would like this one at first, I didn’t like the characters but they evolved and I enjoyed going along for the ride.
