I have never really heard anything about Garfield’s assassination, and never anything about the Oneida Community. I was totally riveted!
Kind of deceptive title and summary as it appears the assassin had little to do with utopia. Unless, the author’s point is to demonstrate that weak connection. There is lots of side stories about people that have little to do with the subject of the book, such as Ulysses Grant and P.T. Barnum.
I typically tolerate Lynn Austin’s religious preaching but this book was too much and lacked her typical depth
If you want a thriller, then get this book. I want go into details to spoil anything, but I really enjoyed the book.
I restarted this one a few times because it took me a bit to get hooked in by this story. Once I got past the prologue I couldn’t stop listening. The layers and depth of the story woven through time are magical. The love and angst, the passion and pain of the characters are palpable…
In our day when so many are calling to tear down statues and erase the past, let us never forget the loving arms of our heavenly Father who waits with a heart full of love, mercy, and grace!
Not sure what I didn’t like. Just glad it’s over. Maybe the narration. Too much focus on younger daughter in the beginning.

An exploration of the time and relationships of Edith Wharton is certainly worth a read, however, dim her deductions were. Really, wasn’t she brighter than this? Also some of the writing was a bit overblown, and the narrator seemed like she was barely on top of the language. Barely. Some mispronunciations.
