Review from Cornering Carmen →
This story feels like it was once a solid idea – but the writing fails completely to take the story seriously. The result feels like it was written for a 14 year old sci-if lover. *Nobody says mumbo-jumbo – ever. “Pain in the neck” I could forgive, but mumbo-jumbo (more than once) was too far…
There were times when I chuckled at Ruth’s exploits and snarky remarks. Asher was, as usual, very entertaining but this time we got see the dark powers that he has. The voices for the various characters are very good.
It’s a bit too long and full of historical details—I wanted more of a biography with personal insights into the characters and lives of the two men–but overall, very good. Also, the reader was excellent. I learned a lot about the great turmoil our country went through over slavery before the Civil War.
pages the myth that the nazi didn’t kill communists and socialists. going so far I the first chapter to write off the 30m people killed in the ussr in ww2. gross. maybe it get better later in the book

I really enjoyed this box set which included the first four books of the series. Each story flowed right into the next one, and I was very glad that I was listening to the box set as each book ended on a cliffhanger. I admired the worldbuilding as there were many intricate details which worked..
I always ask myself, both before and after I take on a book of this length, “Did it really require this many hours?” In this case I think it did. Van Gogh’s life has specific periods and the book is helpful in following his quest for excellence in his faith or his art or his..
Excellent writing, author writes with the confidence and ease of erudition and clearly finds his matter enjoyable to write about. It makes his work fun and fascinating. The sole criticism is that the narrator’s pronounciation of names is not always accurate. Examples I noticed were the names Cassius Chaerea and Charon.
It was much like a Greek or Shakespearean tragedy. The listener knows that all the issues and most of the danger in the story were the result of Character flaws and motivations of the protagonists. But I couldn’t not find out how things ended!
