What disappointed you about Snowbound?
Disturbing subject matter. Gratuitous and depraved sex.
What could Blake Crouch have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Leave out the depraved sex. I am by no means a prude, but I found the subject matter to be very disturbing. He could have left out several scenes and not have detracted from the story at all. Why he had to put them in, I do not know, unless he just wanted to make it more “gritty”.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator was ok, but I’ve heard better.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Snowbound?
The scene where Devlin’s pregnant mother is being “raped”, and Devlin just has to peek through the peep hole and look. This scene brought nothing to the story, but turned my stomach. Also, the scene where the kidnapper murders the family at the truck stop. If he wanted this scene in the book, he didn’t have to present it in gory detail, but rather could have just referred to it as something that happened.
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed this author’s Wayward Pines, but there were some things in that book that I thought were gratuitous gore. This book was, in my opinion, worse. I read for entertainment, not for political commentary (the men at the lodge partaking of the “entertainment” were all successful oil tycoons with no morals, for instance). From the book’s summary, I thought this story would be something totally different than it turned out to be. If I had known it was about human trafficking, I would not have purchased it. I thought it would be science fiction. This book should contain a warning about its content, like television shows and movies do. I won’t be listening to or reading any of Crouch’s books in the future. I wasted my credit on this one.
